| Volleyball history. Volleyball originated in the United States; was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, who decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. Volleyball was imported in Europe by american soldiers during the First World War. The first official italian volleyball championship was played in 1946. An important date in the history of volleyball is 1957, when volleyball was designed as an Olympic team sport, to be included in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokio. On the official site of the Italian Volleyball League you can find the history of italian volleyball, with detailed statistics of volleyball teams and players in any italian volleyball championship. |
